Due to the size of the entry and the time constraints we are only able to publish a critique that includes general observations and individual assessments of the top winners.

Thank you to Hilary Sargeant for judging our Mastiffs at the 2009 GSMF Supported Trenton Kennel Club!

May I first of all thank you for inviting me to judge this excellent dog show and for allowing me the opportunity of seeing the strength in depth of mastiffs in the United States of America.

I was made most welcome and had a wonderful day in spite of the awful rain. It was most enjoyable and I went away safe in the knowledge that our marvellous breed is in extremely safe hands in America.

The entry was very large and I was most impressed by the overall quality and type of the mastiffs I saw. Soundness, size and temperament were generally all absolutely what we would want and I was given the luxury of having some very difficult and close decisions to make during the day.

Best of Breed

Ch Bellawoods Kojak - This lovely fawn dog is two and a half years old and has wonderful type. I loved his head, truly the blend of gentleness and majesty that we would want. Correct dark pigmentation and shape made this dog stand out of the crowd. He moved well, with drive and energy. His outline was correct; he had good depth of chest and lovely conformation.

Best of Winners

Bellawoods Shot in the Dark - I learned afterwards that my Best of Winners is the litter sister of my Best of Breed and she had many of the same qualities that helped her brother to the top award. This super fawn bitch has the correct mastiff shape, good bone and conformation and excellent movement. Her head, too, has such type, with correct dark pigmentation and she is so true to type with her expression of such gentleness. I am sure she will go on to win more awards in the future.

Best Opposite Sex

Ch Eastwinds Badabing - This large brindle bitch has great presence in the ring. She has great substance and size and moves with great drive. Her head and expression are true to type and she has a good topline and correct mastiff shape. I normally prefer a darker brindle but I had to address my prejudice here and admit that she has the quality to be a worthy winner.

Awards of Merit

1. Ch Eastwinds Comfortably Numb - This four year old dog really impressed with his great movement and ring presence. He is a rich apricot brindle, with good shape and conformation and certainly could not be ignored. He is the older half brother of my Best Opposite Sex winner, as I have since learned.

2. Mountainview's Because I Can - This apricot brindle boy was my Winners Dog. He has the correct gentle type and mastiff sparkle which stands out in the ring. He moves with impressive drive and has the correct mastiff shape when standing with great bend of stifle. He also has a lovely head and expression and clearly a super temperament. I discovered later that he is the son of my previous Award of Merit winner !

3. Ch Hoosier Pride and Joy - This young bitch is a three year old dark brindle with very good shape and conformation. She has the correct mastiff outline and moved soundly and with great drive. There is plenty of substance and bone here, matched with good type and expression.

I would finally like to thank all the exhibitors who came along in spite of the difficult weather conditions. Mastiffs at Trenton were a delight to judge and I wish everyone all the best in the future. I went away extremely impressed and optimistic about the state of the breed.
